Parts exchange brainstorm

After getting lots of interest from an earlier post about starting a parts exchange here - it is now time to start figuring out how to set it up best for everyone that desires to potentially use it one day.

Tell me what you would like it to both include and exclude, and any other details you can think of to create an exchange system that is efficient and beneficial to all.

This is for you guys...  all the PowerPC users that need help getting certain parts, whether the reason be geography or lack of money.  Lets make it the best it can be.

One thing I can tell you for sure is that you won't have to post personal details like address or full name to anyone but the person you're sending or receiving parts with.

Now lets fill the comments up with great ideas!

  2. Maybe a wish list for users?

There is a lot of people that have upgraded to CoreImage graphics cards letting those older ones unused. One man's garbage is another one's threasure. I am in the search for OS9 AGP cards better than my Rage 128 PRO. Take this as an example of what could be swapped. I would donate my rage card to other user once I have upgraded. I have no use either for the G4 466 DA CPU daugther board.

All swappers should commit to pay for the shipping.

Also, the zone of the user is important, because within Europe you have to spend less for shipping than thru the Atlantic Ocean.

  3. I like the wishlist idea a lot. Help those with spare parts find needed homes.

When it comes to who pays shipping... I think it's best to leave that up to the two involved in each exchange. The only thing that would get me or any rule involved would be someone scamming in some way, but that would be rare with old parts.

I would prefer that money for shipping be the only funds exchanged, but again, that would rightfully be up to the two involved.

The idea of zones might be good later, but I imagine that early on things will be sparse at best, so they should be made available anywhere.

The key in these situations (shipping-wise) is to use economy all-round, unless it somehow is an emergency. Again, that would be up to the people involved.

I would like to leave it as open as possible, with the only rules ever being made for things like user protection.

  4. How about a give or have list also? A list of parts someone has to give away.

    1. Yes. It only makes sense to have that along with the wish list.

  5. Come on people... don't skimp on the ideas here. If you don't share ideas now, then you can't complain if it doesn't incorporate things you like.

  6. The idea of the wishlist is really good. Users could post the parts that they are looking for and the ones that they could offer.

I think that an index of users and parts is a must, as keeping everything on a blog post could be crazy.

  7. Maybe have a mailing list we can all use? Obviously we would contact info to private email exchange.
